Child maltreatment is a social problem with consequences for the child's healthy development. There are several studies that have explored the impact of poverty on abusive and neglectful parenting practices, revealing that poverty seems to be a risk factor for maltreatement. However, this association is not clear, namely due to the conceptual overlap between neglect and poverty. Thus, the present study aims to carry out a systematic literature review and meta-analysis on the association between poverty and parental abuse and neglect. The search was conducted in electronic databases and, based on the PRISMA methodology, articles were selected through a four-step process, including 16 studies. The included studies mostly explored family poverty associated with abuse. The data also revealed a significant and moderate overall effect size between poverty and maltreatment (r = 0.208, p <.001), which appears to be larger when considering community poverty and maltreatment or neglect. The present work is thus another scientific advance in the exploration of the association between poverty and abuse, highlighting the importance of parental interventions with the most vulnerable families.
