Neste sentido, o presente trabalho parte do
A escolha deste espaço justificase
do Comércio.
necessidades no futuro.
The landscape is seen as a perception of the observer who gives a meaning to what he see, with his own interpretation. Thus, this work consists in the study of the landscape, the perception and the expression of an emblematic public space space of the Portuguese Capital: The Praça do Comércio, in Lisbon. This site was chosen because of its symbolic and historical meaning, and because of its decisive role in the morphology of the city and the water front. This work starts from the landscape approach. Then, it focuses on the photography, on the photographers and the evolution pictured by each one of them, in the way they photograph the case study, comparing the photo’s representation with written records, especially the journalistic ones. This work also tries to question the photographic representation of Praça do Comércio, as a landscape. Being photography a recent representation, we question if it can be considered areliable historical source and a fundamental tool for the understanding and the evolution of the case study’s landscape. Through the interpretation associated with events and transformations that happened in the pass, we tend to a better understanding of the needs for the future. In this way, the photography has demonstrated to be a privileged resource as a basis for a research method, because it’s half way between the social production of the landscape and the representation of the thought.
