The literature has identified the role of several individual, family and social variables as predictors of self-injurious behaviors. Using a quantitative cross-sectional design and a sample of 744 emergent adults (18-30 years), the present study analyzed: the relationship between individual variables (e.g., identity development processes and dimensions of emergent adulthood), family (e.g., family environment) and relational (e.g., social connectedness) in the intensity of suicidal ideation; the differences in relation to the variables of interest as a function of groups of emergent adults with suicidal ideation and without suicidal ideation. The results obtained showed that suicidal ideation is predicted by family conflict and hierarchy, ruminative exploration, commitment and social connectedness; and that emerging adults with suicidal ideation have higher levels of ruminal exploitation, conflict, hierarchy, and family support. The results highlight the importance of family environment and the feeling of social belonging in the development of suicidal behavior. The implications for the literature related to emergent adulthood and clinical practice are discussed, considering the role of individual, family and relational variables in suicidal ideation.
