I develop that conceptual art had an essential role for the critical redefinition of the nature, value, display, role and agency of the heritage object. Due to the specific understanding of the ‘object’ and the institutional critique discourse it established, conceptual art played a significant role in the development of new methodologies in museologic practice since the beginning of the 20th century. Although new museology counts with the implication of contemporary art, a theory of its specific modus operandi in this context and – as I argue – the particular role of conceptual art, have not been systematically pursued so far. The article will demonstrate how the involvement of conceptual, performative, multi-disciplinary artistic practices and display strategies have contributed to the elaboration of innovatory, critical and inclusive transmissions of heritage. Concluding, I consider two case-studies: a modernist work of art and anthropological installation by Andre Breton and a recent artistic and social research project curated by Kathryn Weir – both exhibited at Centre Pompidou Paris.application/pdfengopenAccessMUSEOLOGIAPATRIMÓNIOARTE CONCEPTUALMUSEOLOGYHERITAGECONCEPTUAL ARTLa boîte-en-valise : conceptual art and museologic heritage displayarticle
