Esta doença tem uma distribuição geográfica cosmopolita, marcada pelo alastramento de novos casos registados em regiões previamente consideradas como não endémicas. A Dirofilaria immitis é endémica em Portugal sendo o território nacional categorizado com condições favoráveis para o desenvolvimento dos vetores e consequente propagação da doença. Pretendeu-se, com este estudo, determinar a prevalência de dirofilariose no concelho de Leiria e avaliar o estado de conhecimento sobre a doença em Portugal. Para tal, entre Julho de 2022 e Dezembro de 2022, foram colhidas 92 amostras de sangue de cães no concelho de Leiria, em ambiente hospitalar ou de clínica e de canil. Posteriormente, todas as amostras foram submetidas a testes de diagnóstico, nomeadamente teste modificado de Knott e DFV® Test Dirofilaria – Heartworm para determinação da prevalência no distrito. Adicionalmente foram realizados 700 inquéritos online a tutores de cães a nível nacional. A prevalência de Dirofilaria immitis em cães no concelho de Leiria é de 2,17%. Relativamente ao inquérito realizado a nível nacional, foi possível determinar um maior conhecimento da doença em regiões mais a sul do país, indo em concordância com a maior prevalência da doença previamente registada. Com base nos resultados obtidos neste estudo, é possível afirmar que embora não possamos catalogar o concelho de Leiria como livre de dirofilariose, também não está correto caracterizar esta região como endémica. Juntamente com a informação colhida através dos inquéritos, foi possível determinar a importância do médico veterinário na comunicação e divulgação de informação sobre a dirofilariose, tornando-o assim no pilar principal para a sua prevenção. This disease is caused by a nematode, from which Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens are the most important due to their high pathogenicity and its negative impact in public health because of their zoonotic nature. This disease has a cosmopolitan geographic distribution, marked by the spread of new cases registered in regions previously considered non-endemic. Dirofilaria immitis is endemic in Portugal and the national territory is categorized with favorable conditions for the development of vectors and consequent spread of the disease. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of heartworm disease in the county of Leiria and to assess the state of knowledge about the disease in Portugal. To this end, between July 2022 and December 2022, 92 blood samples were collected from dogs in the county of Leiria, in a hospital, clinic and kennel environment. Subsequently, all samples were submitted to diagnostic tests, namely the modified Knott test and DFV® Test Dirofilaria – Heartworm to determine the prevalence in the county. Additionally, 700 online surveys were carried out to dog owners nationwide. The prevalence of Dirofilaria immitis in dogs in the municipality of Leiria is 2.17%. With regard to the survey carried out at national level, it was possible to determine greater knowledge of the disease in the southern regions of the country, in line with the higher prevalence of the previously recorded disease. Based on the results obtained in this study, it is possible to state that although we cannot catalogue Leiria as heartworm free, it´s also not correct to characterize this region as endemic. Together with the information collected from the surveys, it was possible to determine the importance of the veterinarian in the communication and dissemination of information about heartworm disease, thus making him the main pillar for its prevention.
