É fundamental assinalar que a pequena instituição escolar dos padres jesuítas da Vila do Desterro foi um sintoma de integração da Ilha de Santa Catarina na política colonial metropolitana, pelo facto de a Companhia de Jesus ter sido a principal congregação católica que acompanhava a expansão dos domínios lusitanos na sua colónia americana.This article is an account of the foundation of the Jesuit College in Southern Brazil and its very brief duration. There is a compilation of prior Jesuit missions in the region and a contextualization of the role of the college in the administrative division of the Santa Catarina Island as part of the Southern frontier’s integration in the colonial expansion and population policy, which in Brazil was always accompanied by Jesuitic presence.
