Cerca de 90% da DMF é caraterizada pela disfunção das células β do pâncreas e insulinorresistência dos tecidos que levam a uma hiperglicemia persistente. Estas alterações ocorrem por influência de um conjunto de fatores individuais, ambientais e genéticos que são muito semelhantes à DMT2 nas pessoas, pelo que este mesmo termo tem sido usado para classificar a maioria dos casos da DMF. Os sinais clínicos, diagnóstico, tratamento e complicações da DMF são abordadas de forma generalizada referindo o mais comum, mas também os pontos menos reportados, incluindo novas terapêuticas e inovações que surgem com o trabalho em conjunto da medicina veterinária e a medicina humana. São apresentados três casos clínicos diferentes. O primeiro reporta um caso clínico típico de DMF, o segundo caso apresenta uma situação complicada com uma periodontite associado à diabetes mellitus, muito reportado em pessoas mas com escassa abordagem nos felinos, e o terceiro caso descreve diabetes mellitus associada a pancreatite. Estes exemplos são importantes para reforçar o tipo de percurso a realizar em diferentes situações de DMF que, embora em nenhum dos casos tenha ocorrido a remissão da doença, mostra os sucessos e dificuldades desta síndrome. Palavras-chaves: Diabetes mellitus; diabetes mellitus tipo 2; diabetes mellitus felina; glucose sanguínea; insulina; neuropatia diabética; periodontite; piorreia; pancreatite.Knowing the growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DMT2) in human medicine and its high parallelism with most feline diabetes mellitus (DMF), this dissertation, carried out as part of the conclusion of the Integrated Master's Degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, besides presenting three clinical cases within the theme of DMF, exposes the similarities and differences between these two complex syndromes. Around 90% of DMF is characterized by pancreatic β-cell dysfunction and tissue insulin resistance leading to persistent hyperglycemia. These changes occur due to the influence of individual, environmental and genetic factors that are very similar to DMT2 in people, so this same term has been used to classify most cases of DMF. The clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment and complications of DMF are covered in a generalised way referring to the most common, but also the less reported points, including new therapies and innovations that arise with the joint work of veterinary medicine and human medicine. Three different clinical cases are presented. The first one reports a typical clinical case of DMF, the second case presents a complicated situation with a periodontitis associated with diabetes mellitus, much reported in people but with little approach in felines, and the third case describes diabetes mellitus associated with pancreatitis. These examples are important to reinforce the type of route to take in different situations of DMF that, although in none of the cases remission of the disease occurred, shows the successes and difficulties of this syndrome.
