Estes sistemas apresentam inúmeras vantagens, no entanto também são apontadas algumas desvantagens. O facto de se poder desenvolver sistemas implantáveis para veicular fármacos com fraca absorção gastrointestinal e com curto tempo de meia-vida, torna estes sistemas muito interessantes do ponto de vista da investigação e indústria. Em Portugal, os sistemas terapêuticos implantáveis de libertação prolongada de fármacos são administrados com várias finalidades, tais como, contraceção feminina, neoplasia, doenças oculares e reconstituição óssea.An implant is a drug delivery system that allows the controlled and/or prolonged drug release. These systems present several advantages, although some disadvantages can be pointed out. From a research and industry point of view, these systems are very interesting because they can carry and deliver drugs with low gastrointestinal absorption and short half-life.
