Na escola, o conceito que agora se pretende generalizar implica também uma mudança de paradigma no atendimento a crianças e jovens que apresentam tais dificuldades, uma vez que aponta para que o mesmo deixe de ser feito com base no grau de deficiência atribuído para passar a basear-se nos apoios efetivamente necessários.This paper shows how the concept of mental deficiency or cognitive deficit has evolved until recent times, when it was replaced by the concept of intellectual and development difficulties as a result of reflections around this problem that underlined the negative or pejorative connotations of the deficiency term.
