Muito embora na lei de bases da Autoridade Nacional da Proteção Civil, Lei nº27 de 2006, não seja aprofundado o papel e a importância da intervenção do Serviço Social em situações de catástrofe, dando-se uma maior importância às questões do socorro e salvamento, não podemos esquecer que aliada a esta vem a intervenção social e neste sentido necessitamos cada vez mais especializar técnicos nestas áreas nomeadamente Assistentes Sociais, pois só assim podemos fazer uma intervenção eficaz e eficiente. A presente dissertação tem como objetivo geral conhecer o papel do Assistente Social nas Equipas de Intervenção Psicossocial na Ilha Terceira, a metodologia integrada nesta investigação utilizou instrumentos de cariz qualitativo, pesquisa e análise documental, pesquisa bibliográfica e entrevistas, estas foram às bases metodológicas fundamentais para responder aos objetivos desta investigação. Neste contexto foram aplicadas entrevistas aos técnicos sociais que fazem parte das instituições que compõem o PME (Plano Municipal de Emergência), aos Presidentes de Câmara de Angra do Heroísmo e Praia da Vitória, Presidente do SRPCBA (Serviço Regional Proteção Civil e Bombeiros Açores) e à Coordenadora do Núcleo Ação Social de Angra do Heroísmo. Da análise dos resultados concluiu-se que a maior parte dos técnicos entrevistados não possui formação específica na área de intervenção em situação de catástrofe, a Equipa de Intervenção Psicossocial na Ilha Terceira não se encontra organizada, as funções desempenhadas pelos Assistentes Sociais em situações de catástrofe incidem essencialmente no levantamento de necessidades e articulação com outras entidades, as maiores dificuldades encontradas no terreno pelos Assistentes Sociais em situação efetiva de catástrofe, remetem à falta de coordenação, falta de formação e funções não atribuídas.With new challenges emerging new risks emerge, they are leading increasingly to confront with the tragic events, which by their nature and magnitude affect the way we live the present and think about the future. Although the basic law of Civil Protection National Authority, 2006, Law nº 27, is not in-depth the role and importance of Social Services intervention in disaster situations, giving a greater importance to issues of relief and rescue, we can not forget that this is combined with social intervention and in this sense we need to increasingly specialize in these technical areas including Social Workers, because only then we can do an effective and efficient intervention. This work main objective is to know the role of the social worker in Psychosocial Intervention Teams in Terceira Island, the integrated methodology in this research used qualitative instruments, search and documents analyse, literature review and interviews, these were the fundamental methodological bases to meet the objectives of this research. In this context interviews were applied to social workers who are part of the institutions that integrate the MEP (Municipal Emergency Plan), to the Mayors of Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória, Chairman of RCFPA (Regional Civil Service and Fire Protection of Azores) and Coordinator of Social Work of Angra do Heroísmo.
