Quem foi Francisco Morais, o organizador, tradutor e anotador da princeps portuguesa? E, finalmente, que futuro teve esta, em Portugal? Eis algumas das questões a que este texto procura dar resposta.The first Portuguese edition of Machiavelli's Il Principe appeared in 1935, more than four hundred years after the original Italian publication. It took the form of a “political edition”, which, at that particular moment, presented to the Portuguese reader a Fascist Machiavelli, prefaced by Mussolini himself. What were the political and ideological circumstances in which the book appeared? How does the ideological appropriation of Machiavelli present itself and what were its underlying motives? What are the merits of the translation? Who was Francisco Morais, the organizer, translator and annotator of the Portuguese princeps? Finally, what future did it have, in Portugal?
