Acupuncture is one of the oldest treatment arts, based on the Fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Even though its ancient history, it is not yet fully disseminated in Portugal. The present study had as objective to conduct a survey of 112 clinical cases in the Greater Lisbon region, relating information such as species, age, sex, race, diagnosed condition and the most used acupuncture stimulation techniques. Dogs accounted for 85% while cats were only 12% and another (birds-porrots) 3%, with 55% males and 45% females, aged 0 to 1 year (n-2), 1 to 5 years (n-32), 6 to 9 years old (n-19), 10 to 16 years old (n-49). The French Bulldog and Labrador breeds were the majority with 14 patients each, and mixed breed with 13 patients. Neurological and musculoskeletal disorders represented, respectively for 47% and 28% of the cases treated, with intervertebral disc disease and spondyloarthrosis were the most common diseases. The techniques for stimulation of acupuncture points used were dry needle was used in 110 cases, moxibustion in 19; electroacupuncture in 56, laserpuncture in 50 and pharmacopuncture in 1 service. Currently, the need to improve treatment options leads to the recovery of techniques associated with other medicines, safe and effective, for therapeutic resources in chronic and acute clinical cases, where conventional medicine is not successful. In this sense, the findings of this study indicate that acupuncture is a promising therapy in the small animal clinic.
