Every book has a story. This collective work has its own, as is only to be expected. It was born out of the criticism levelled by Carlos Alberto Torres, who, as member of the External Monitoring and Advisory Committee of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Education and Development (CeiED), called our attention to the limited knowledge each of us has on the work, scientific concerns, theoretical frameworks used by everyone else in the unit. Accepting this critical observation, it was then decided, along with other options, to edit two collections of a selection of papers, both in Portuguese and English, published by the CeiED researchers in the period between 2013 and 2017. The present volume represents the collection of papers originally published in English.

(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2021-03) Costa, Carlos Smaniotto; Batista, Joana; Almeida, Inês; Menezes, Marluci; Skaržauskienė, Aelita; Mačiulienė, Monika; Botteldooren, Dick; Renterghem, Timothy Van; Pizzi, Rita; Ceravolo, Paolo; Erjavec, Ina Šuklje; Žlender, Vita; Marušić, Barbara Goličnik; CeiED - Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Education and Development
This e-book and correspondent platform MyC3Place present the collection of the outcomes carried out by the partners of the C3Places Project. It explores the new dynamics of open spaces as a trusted service for community and expands our understanding on how mediated public open spaces function, paying attention to stakeholders, local context and different social groups. The e-book shows how it's possible to increase the quality of public open spaces (squares, parks, green spaces) as a community’s service, reflecting through ICT the needs of different social groups. Public spaces are critical for cultural identity, as they offer the place for interactions among generations and ethnicities. Even in the digital era, people still need contact with nature and other people to develop different life skills, values and attitudes, to be healthy, satisfied and environmentally responsible. Using ICT and co-creating with users, this e-book expands our knowledge on meeting emerging citizens’ needs about the future public space. All the contents are classified by means of keywords that are described on the following pages. Then the work of each partner is presented in detail.

How would tourists use Green Spaces? Case Studies in Lisbon
(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2014) Costa, Carlos Smaniotto; Menezes, Marluci; Mateus, Diogo; FCSEA - Faculty of Social Sciences, Education and Administration
This report provides in a relative condensed format the results of small-scale study undertaken in Lisbon during the Meeting of the CyberParks Project (www.cost.eu/COST_Actions/tud/Actions/TU1306). CyberParks is a COST Action coordinated by the Universidade Lusófona at the CeiED - Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Education and Development. The Project aims at creating a research platform on the relationship between Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the production of public open spaces, and their relevance to sustainable urban development. The impacts of this relationship are being explored from social, ecological, urban design and technological perspectives. Based on the supposition that the participants of the Meeting are tourists visiting Lisbon, a survey was carried out on the topic how people actually use and how they would use public spaces. This survey is also the first approach to the case study areas chosen in Lisbon: Parque Quinta das Conchas and Jardim da Estrela. Both green spaces will be subject of further studies in the forthcoming years. This study employed (1) a questionnaire for measuring the user’s experience and preferences, and (2) two different tracking devices that utilise GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), in our case the GPS for satellite positioning technologies. It also presents the results of a study on the relevance of wi-fi in Lisbon’s public spaces. Even considering that the surveys in Lisbon’s green spaces are a first exercise within the work programme of CyberParks they show important outcomes. On the one hand, regarding the technologies used and their potential for research and on the other hand the findings about Lisbon’s green spaces. It should be noted that the conducted surveys and the gathered data are statistically not representative, but can be characterised as an empirical case and as a showcase, as how tourists tend to use a green space. The results shows that surveys benefit from multiple research methods and from combining insights.

The making of the mediated public space : Essays on emerging urban phenomena
(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2017) Costa, Carlos Smaniotto; Ioannidis, Konstantinos; ECATI - School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information Technologies; CeiED - Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Education and Development
The critical role of wireless connectivity and the easy access to fast, automated, databases and information technology during most of our outdoor activities can be hardly disputed. The way the urban fabric is being experienced along with the affects to the phenomenal and experiential dimensions of public open spaces, is nowadays quite different few decades ago, thanks to the hyperactivity and new hybrid realities to which we are constantly exposed (Castells, 2004).

The potential of citizen science for socio-spatial studies : defining and operationalizing research pathways
(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2023) Simon, Sandrine; Duarte, Tiago; Correia, Sónia Vladimira; Fernandes, Pedro Afonso; Costa, Carlos Smaniotto; Manico, Zuinder; CeIED (FCT) - Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares em Educação e Desenvolvimento; ECATI - School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information Technologies; CIDEFES - Centro de Investigação em Desporto, Educação Física, Exercício e Saúde (CIFI2D)
The term Citizen Science has been used in various contexts, but little effort has been made to provide a vision of it in regard to socio-spatial studies, which are at the core of the research group on Citizen Science in understanding and transforming the territory (CIDATE). The authors of this chapter represent widely diverse disciplines, including environmental engineering, economics, urban planning and design, landscape architecture and education. The chapter intends to deliver a tailored and timely vision of how, with the help of Citizen Science, the democratisation of science can be promoted and, with this, more collective and sustainable decision making achieved. This chapter is the result of a reflective dialogue between researchers, their projects and experiences tackling spatial and human development from different perspectives. It gathers the conclusions that emerged in the organised debates and the research projects carried out by the researchers, towards creating a broad understanding of the key issues that could help operationalise Citizen Science in future research efforts. Keywords – Citizen science, socio-spatial research, key principles of citizenscience, citizen's contribution to science, social sciences.

The production of public open spaces and the deliberate exclusion of undesirables
(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2020) Costa, Carlos Smaniotto; Patrício, Catarina; CeiED - Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Education and Development; CICANT - Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies
While the remaining chapters in this book introduce and discuss a series of experiences in co-creation and participatory processes in the production of public spaces, this chapter intends to reflect on the appropriation and the production of public spaces from another aspect – that of the undesirables, those who are not wanted in the use of public spaces. By ‘undesirable’ is to be understood all those who, for different reasons, are not supposed to use - at least for a large amount of time - a public space. The reasons for considering someone undesirable are diverse and often not explicit. Yet, this divide severely restricts social development and limits the understanding of publicness and of an urban society, which is undoubtedly becoming more and more diverse. For those considered “proper”, such daily actions as using a public space are never questioned. Exclusion is a delicate issue, and thus probably no one will publicly recommend excluding the undesirables from public life; however, in fact, an increasing number of architectural elements are being put in place in order to restrict the accessibility and use of public spaces by certain citizens. And the decision to do so is an ambiguous one, as design aims at finding solutions that are effective from a user's perspective. This chapter argues that the production of public space, namely the idealized informality of open public space, is a continuation of the social conflicts present in normative space dynamics by renewed exclusion means and strategies.

Programming the logic of space : a new approach to space syntax
(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2023-09) Fernandes, Pedro Afonso; Costa, Carlos Smaniotto; Aragão, Nagayamma; Costa, Carlos Smaniotto; Aragão, Nagayamma; CeiED - Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Education and Development; ECATI - School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information Technologies
Space syntax is a set of theories and techniques for analysing urban settlements and buildings. It is a relevant approach for spatial studies concerned with the scientific understanding of and intervention in public open spaces. It requires a previous convex/line/segment map of the area in question designed with the aid of CAD or GIS. Such preparatory task may be laborious and more difficult for social researchers than for architects or urban planners. A new approach to syntactic analyses is proposed here; it requires only setting the connections between axial lines or convex spaces in a computer program. We performed a settlement (alpha) analysis of the Areeiro neighbourhood in Lisbon by computing connectivity, control, depth, integration, ringiness and other syntactic measures, using Prolog predicates. Prolog is a logic programming language used in Artificial Intelligence and a powerful tool to describe the patterns of urban systems as socially knowable due to its declarative nature. In fact, a Prolog program represents a certain amount of knowledge, in this case, of an urban settlement such Areeiro, which is used to answer queries about the social and economic consequences of the spatial design. This approach revealed the intelligibility but also the weaknesses of Areeiro, a remarkable milestone for Portuguese urbanism from the mid-20th century. Keywords - Space syntax, alpha-analysis of urban settlements, logic programming, Prolog

A review of urban river restoration projects : practices and challenges
(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2023) Orey, António D'; Aragão, Nagayamma Kaymir Tavares de Sousa; Costa, Carlos Smaniotto; Duarte, Tiago; ECATI - School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information Technologies
Urban rivers are one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world, being the focus of neglect or costly restoration. It is therefore urgent to identify appropriate technical solutions that, associated with social innovations and collaborative planning approaches, can guide new ways of treating the water of rivers threatened by urban pressures – in particular in the context of climate change, biodiversity and economic challenges. This chapter reports on a research project that attempted to examine interventions in rivers through the lens of environment, planning, technology, and societies. The Project Base Platform Urban Rivers – baseRiU aimed to expand the body of knowledge dedicated to the research on and ways to approach urban rivers. Besides providing a broad base for further research, the findings clearly have shown that resources invested in restoration, renaturing and bringing rivers back to the city make the best investment, as cities become wealthier, with more complex (green and blue) structures, more biodiverse, and environment-, climate- and people-friendlier. Creating sustainable solutions, rediscovering urban rivers’ multiple values to society and the environment can be a driving force in the transition to more sustainable (urban) systems. Yet, bending the curve towards sustainability also requires a radical change in mindsets – and to guide this we need more practice-based evidence. Keywords - Rivers and watercourses, restoration and regeneration, riverain communities, participatory processes, place-based networks

Territorial capacity and inclusion : co-creating a public space with teenagers
(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2023) Costa, Carlos Smaniotto; Menezes, Marluci; Batista, Joana Solipa; ECATI - School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information Technologies; CeiED - Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Education and Development
This book provides insights regarding the involvement of teenagers in the co-creation of public open spaces. It brings together conceptual reflections and an exploratory case study in Lisbon. It is an attempt to point out the intangible benefits of engaging young people in placemaking to academics, practitioners, policymakers, students, and all parties concerned with urban development. This book aims at inspiring progressive placemaking and co-creation processes. It attempts to reframe the debate on how vulnerable members of the community access public spaces, what their needs are, and what their response would be to a more people-centred urban design. It is with respect to these points that the book Territorial capacity and inclusion: Co-creating a public space with teenagers explores and analyses the engagement of teenagers in the production of public spaces. A group who rarely have opportunities to be heard and for their views to be considered. On these particular matters, the teenagers’ perspective takes central stage by seeking to explore what their engagement means for spatial inclusiveness and responsiveness
