The long duration of both dictatorships, 48 years in Portugal and 40 in Spain, had profound repercussions in the modeling of mentalities, impeding the contrast of ideas and keeping their societies constrained by values that were in a deep revision in Europe: family, catholic religion, order, hierarchy. They based their legitimacy by maintaining the myth that with a rebellion against republican institutions they could save the State and the perpetuity of the fatherland.
