The questions on the power of languages, on their weight and economic value have fulfilled, currently, political and academic agendas, although the interest in the economy of languages dates back to the second half of the twentieth century. Concerning Portuguese, its internationalization is a concern, either by trade and business relations, or within the language policies. From both perspectives, the teaching of Portuguese is inevitable. Under the standpoint of Education, introducing a more dynamic language approach in teacher training of Portuguese, as a language of international communication, directed to its diffusion, is essential in a globalized world, where other languages meet and connect. In this framework, a pilot study with students from the Masters in teacher training in basic education (2nd cycle of Bologne) has been developed. These students are attending the supervised teaching practice in four subjects, one of which is Portuguese, at a university in Portugal. We wanted them to identify the importance of Portuguese in the world, its values and potentialities, and even ways to promote its diffusion. As methodology for data collection, a questionnaire survey was conceived, and subsequently provided to 14 students attending a semiannual curricular unit. The questionnaire had open and closed questions and was divided into four stages: i) Identification of the respondents, ii) Languages and the Portuguese Language (PL), iii) Internationalization of the PL and iv) the values of the PL. To process the collected data, NVivo 10 software was used, where the answers were encoded and categories and subcategories of analysis were created, in order to proceed with a content analysis. Regarding the participants characterization, they were all female, the mother tongue of the majority was Portuguese, there was one Venezuelan who dominated Spanish and they were mostly from the north and center of the country. The results pointed at a lack of knowledge about the position of the most spoken languages in the world, the countries and organizations where Portuguese was the official language, as well as the fact that all varieties of Portuguese are correct. Some responses also showed some lack of knowledge concerning the concept of lusophony and the Portuguese-speaking world in general. However, we noticed i) a recognition of the importance of disseminating the PL in the world, ii) some openness to a teaching approach of Portuguese towards the demands of contemporary society and ii) a reflection, even if not very deep and reasoned, on the position of the Portuguese language in the world. Faced with the increasing prominent position of Portuguese and the need to train teachers sensitive to this recent reality, the development of projects of this nature would have all the opportunity.
