With the purpose of understanding the role of mass media in the grasp of current events, this essay analyzes the treatment given by newspapers and magazines of its time to the earthquake that devastated Lisbon in 1755, considering it the birth of the modern mediatic event. What deserves attention is mainly connected with the fact that its contemporary newspapers and magazines gave a continuous report of the event, not only through November 1755, when it occurred, but also in a regular basis along 1756 and, more sporadically, till 1759. We place this event in the moment in which a journalistic public scene is constituted, showing the importance of its treatment by the newspapers of its time, the relevance of the debates it raised and how, in the specific case of Lisbon’s earthquake, the articulation between the scientific fact and the journalistic fact is particularly manifest.
