Ensino Pós-Graduado de Turismo nos EUA : uma experiência portuguesa

Resumo
O presente artigo baseia-se numa intervenção do autor feita no âmbito do “Seminário sobre as Relações do Ensino Superior e da Investigação Científica com as Actividades Turísticas”, que decorreu na Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, em Junho de 2008, subordinada ao tema do ensino pós-graduado em turismo, de alunos portugueses nos EUA. Tendo como ponto de partida a experiência pessoal do autor, o artigo aborda o sistema de ensino pós-graduado em turismo dos EUA, comparando-o com o português, com particular relevo para os diferentes percursos académicos, e efectuando a destrinça entre os dois principais tipos de instituições de ensino de turismo norte-americanas. O artigo aborda ainda as relações entre as instituições de ensino superior em turismo nos EUA e os organismos e empresas turísticas nomeadamente ao nível da pesquisa cientifica.
The present article is based on a previous invited conference presentation by the author, at the “Seminário sobre as Relações do Ensino Superior e da Investigação Científica com as Actividades Turísticas” conference, which took place in June 2008 at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias (Lisbon, Portugal). Based on the author’s personal experience, the present article focuses on post-graduate tourism studies in the United States, attempting to draw a critical comparison with the Portuguese system. The author highlights the different degrees awarded by the American system, and briefly identifies the different types of institutions of higher learning in tourism in the U.S. Lastly, the author touches upon the relationships between the aforementioned institutions and its corporate counterparts, especially in regard to financing and conducting scientific research in tourism.
