Resumo
O presente trabalho busca compreender as
A proposta
no século XXI).
provocando descontinuidade e obrigando a
veja covers The present work searches to understand the ways in which the media operate in the choice and selection of certain subjects at the same time they are affected by others. The proposal is to look for two different conceptions of events: one that we named legitimate, because they emerge of their own force, breaking up with expectations, affecting the experiences of the subjects and forcing an investigation about their causes and consequences – in tune with Louis Quéré’s conception; and another we call legitimated, built and selected according with their unpredictability and actuality potential, linked to the daily events and not producing significant changes for the collective – adopting the views of Mouillaud and Charaudeau as a starting point. Questioning those different ways of appearance of the event in the surface of media, we begin with the analysis of the Brazilian magazine Veja’s 2001 issues. Of that year’s 51 editions, we’ve selected an event that we called legitimated (related to the new role of masculinity in our society) and three events that we called legitimate (one of them occupying seven layers of the magazine): the attacks of September 11. The attempt here is to determine if at the same time that the media open up to a legitimate event in its transformation power (as September 11 did), they need to legitimate other events to guarantee their own survival as an institution. The discussion won’t follow an attempt to justify media’s dual character in the way they treat the events. Instead, our goal is to understand the way media operate in the choice and selection of certain subjects at the same time they are affected by others. Our aim is to understand how the media deal with those two conceptions of events: one that emerges provoking discontinuity and forcing an investigation about its past and future; and another that is a discursive construction linked to the daily agenda, without great power to affect the collective. Which are the forces at work between the legitimate event and the one that is legitimated by the media’s speech?
