fazer desta morte consumo do consumado,
revirar a ferida narcísica condenada a não
cicatrizar, a finitude humana, e dela fazer
Fifteen years after Ayrton Senna’s death it seems convenient to look back on the conditions that made the construction of his image as a contemporary hero possible. His death, turned into a major mediatic event, worked as catalyst for capital flows around the world, as well as contemporary values. According to Marcel Mauss, the best moment to study society is when you have a full social fact, an instance when the completeness of what is social is formed by many layers of juxtaposed plans, an instance that presents itself through the experience. Because it has the qualities of a full, complete social fact, the happening “death of Ayrton Senna” is adequate for a reflection about the myth and the Post-modern Condition. Senna’s death is, then, the starting point to think about contemporary issues – society of the spectacle and consumption -, which reveals its wicked face after the death of one of its biggest idols. This death has to be turned into the consumption of what is consummated, poking the narcissistic wound that is doomed not to heal, human’s finitude, and then reverberate a possible, mediatic, schizoid immortality. The matter of media communication as a linking element in social organization, as well as its central position in structuring contemporary society will be emphasized. The speed issue will also be addressed, due to its importance in Formula One. Another important aspect in what concerns that sport is the status of the human body nowadays, and the relations between television and Formula One. Our assumption will be that the human body is, today, both capital and consumer good; an object of narcissistic investments, from where visible signs of happiness, beauty and health must be extracted.
