This research analyzes the opinion of directors and teachers of Specialized Artistic Education of Music of Portuguese Basic Education concerning the influence of musical learning in students’ academic performance. We have inquired four directors and twenty teachers of students who attend the Basic Courses of Music and Gregorian Chant in the 3rd cycle of Basic Education. Of the content analysis performed resulted three categories of units of registration (UR): (1) Cause-and-effect indetermination between musical learning and academic achievement (4.5% UR in directors and 7.0% in teachers) (2) Non-musical benefits not exclusive of musical learning (6.0% only in directors), and (3) Non-musical benefits due to musical learning (89.6% in directors and 93.0% in teachers). In this third category, the benefits in academic achievement were set out in second place by the directors and in last place by the teachers, in comparison to gains in two other emerging domains in this category: Social and personal development and cognitive abilities. We conclude that the effects of musical learning indicated by directors and teachers extend far beyond the benefits in academic achievement. The results were discussed taking into account the influence that the professional function of the respondents on the assessment of the effects of musical learning in academic achievement of students, as well as in the fields of social and personal development and cognitive abilities may have.
