Resumo
Neste artigo explora-se a posição do indivíduo
situado no centro da cidade moderna, mais
exactamente a oposição do sujeito que verdadeiramente
está dentro dela com o sujeito
que, ainda dentre dela, a olha contemplativamente
de um ponto vista exterior, a olha a
através de uma janela. Para analisar as consequências
dessa posição, segue-se o percurso de
dois contos, um de E. A. Poe e outro de E. T.
Hoffmann. Em ambos os casos, assistimos à
posição do espectador que, sozinho e olhando
através da janela, vê que o movimento de uma
cidade é o movimento de uma multidão. A oposição entre indivíduo e multidão estrutura as
modernas cidades, num sentido mais profundo
que o geralmente referido, utilizando-se algumas
intuições de W. Benjamin para aprofundar essa
relação. Salientando sempre a oposição entre
espaço privado e espaço público, entre indivíduo
e multidão, e entre multidão orde nada e multidão
desordenada, o artigo termina prolongando
a metáfora da janela para os usos também
metafóricos das «janelas» em ambientes virtuais.
This article explores the positioning of the individual situated in a modern urban centre, more precisely the opposition between the subject who finds himself truly within the latter and the subject who, despite being inside a city, contemplatively gazes at it from an external point of view, looking through a window. In order to analyse the consequence of this position, we turn to the trajectory of two short- -stories, one from E. A. Poe and the other from E. T. Hoffmann. In both cases, one witnesses the position of the spectator who, looking through the window in isolation, sees that the movement of the city is the movement of a multitude. The opposition between individual and multitude structures modern cities, in a more profound sense than is generally referred; this relation will be delved into on the basis of W. Benjamin’s insights. Always emphasising the opposition between private and public space, between individual and multitude, and between disciplined and undisciplined multitude, the article ends by extending the window metaphor to the also metaphoric uses of «windows» in virtual contexts.
