The purpose of this paper is to problematize the role of Russia as an emerging or reemerging economy. It is our opinion that Russia is not an emerging economy, as the concept is traditionally understood, usually associated to the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), but rather a reemerging economy. There are several elements of dissociation from the traditional image that one has of emerging markets. Those elements put Russia in a position of reemergence, not only of economic power, but also of political power. The concept will be approached in a broad perspective, including not only economic factors, but also political and military ones. Despite all the strategic power, the loss of global influence and an economy facing several problems makes it difficult to classify Russia as an emerging power, similar to China or India. Opposite to others emerging markets, Russia does not experience a demographic growth able to sustain its economic and political ambitions. Also, the figures for GDP growth are very far from what we might expect from an emerging market. If Russia is considered a reemerging market, partly is due to its energy advantage, which allows the country to have a regional influence and it is one of the best economic and political instruments of power over Europe. Over the last years, Russia has searched for new allies, in order to be able to regain its place in international scene. Russians have strengthened relations with the BRICS, and in particular with China, in an attempt to become not only regional powers but also global powers.
