Item Analysis of mental health-related stigma : Patterns of personal concealment and discrimination(Universidade da Beira Interior, 2024) Carvalho, Ana; SANTOS, ISABEL OLIMPIA FIGUEIREDO DOS; Costa, Leonor Pereira da; Albuquerque, Sara; Beato, Ana; EPCV - School of Psychology and Life Sciences; HEI-LAB - Human Environment Interaction LabMental health-related stigma leads people to conceal their diagnoses to avoid discrimination, negatively affecting their lives. Understanding the patterns of these factors is crucial for developing effective responses. This study aimed to identify subgroups within the population regarding concealment of mental health problems, personal experiences of discrimination, perceptions of group discrimination and social stigma. It was conducted with 389 adults (86.6% female) from 18 to 76 years old (M=35.7, SD=14.0), using an online survey with indices of Identity Concealment, Personal and Group Discrimination, and the Attribution Questionnaire. Cluster analysis was performed and identified three subgroups: “Self-protectors”, demonstrating high concealment, and low personal discrimination, group discrimination and social stigma; “Stigmatizers”, revealing moderate concealment, personal discrimination and group discrimination, and high social stigma; and “At Risk”, exhibiting low concealment, high personal and group discrimination, and moderate social stigma. Results further showed that “Self-protectors” has the highest prevalence of mental health problems, while “Stigmatizers” has the lowest. Findings highlight the heterogeneity of attitudes towards mental health and the impact that experiences can have on fostering social stigma. Implications for interventions to reduce stigma and increase mental health literacy are discussed, which should be tailored to particular target groups. Despite recent research that suggests COVID-19 and lockdown measures may eventually impact sexual response and sexually related behaviors, we are missing clinical sexologists’ perspectives on the impact of COVID-19 in sexual health. Such perspectives could inform a preliminary framework aimed at guiding future research and clinical approaches in the context of COVID-19. Aim: To explore the perspectives of clinical sexologists about the impact of COVID-19 on their patients’ sexual health, as well as the professional challenges they have faced during the current pandemic. Findings are expected to inform a preliminary framework aimed at understanding the impact of COVID-19 on sexual health. Methods: We conducted an online qualitative exploratory survey with 4 open-ended questions with 39 clinical sexologists aged between 32 and 73 years old. The survey was advertised among professional associations’ newsletters. We performed a Thematic Analysis using an inductive, semantic, and (critical) realist approach, leading to a final thematic map. Main Outcome Measures: The outcome is the thematic map and the corresponding table that aggregates the main themes, subthemes, and codes derived from participants’ answers and that can serve as a preliminary framework to understand the impact of COVID-19 on sexual health. Results: The final thematic map, expected to serve as a preliminary framework on the impact of COVID-19 in sexual health, revealed 3 main themes: Clinical Focus, Remapping Relationships, and Reframing Technology Use. These themes aggregate important interrelated issues, such as worsening of sexual problems and dysfunctions, mental health, relationship management, the rise of conservatism, and the use of new technology that influences sexuality and sexual health-related services. Conclusion: The current study allowed us to develop a preliminary framework to understand the impact of COVID-19 on sexual health. This framework highlights the role of mental health, as well as the contextual nature of sexual problems, and subsequently, their relational nature. Also, it demonstrates that the current pandemic has brought into light the debate of e-Health delivery within clinical sexology. PM Pascoal, J Carvalho, CF Raposo, et al. Exploring Portuguese female gamer's perception's and experience regarding sexism in the gaming(2021) Valente, Verónica; Beato, Ana; EPCV - School of Psychology and Life SciencesObjective: The analysis aimed to understand Portuguese gamers’ perceptions of sexism in the world of gaming, focusing on the female perspective regarding existing gamer gender stereotypes and their experiences with online harassment while playing digital role-playing games (RPGs). Design and Method: This qualitative study comprised of 14 semi-structured interviews with individuals who identify as females between the age of 18 to 42 (M = 26.1; SD = 5.9) from different regions in Portugal which currently self-identified as gamers. Results: Two main themes emerged from the thematic analysis of the interview transcripts: (a) gamer gender stereotypes and (b) types of sexism between gamers. When reflecting on female gamer stereotypes, these were described negatively within the community and their competence to play is often questioned based on gender difference. Beyond this, results showed how gamers perceive types of sexism differently according to context, often partaking in benevolent sexism to alleviate the negative connotation of sexism provided by humor and sexist compliments. However, female gamers rendered multiple personal descriptions of hostile sexism and sexual objectification combined leading to online sexual harassment by their fellow male gamers while playing. These findings shed light on the issues of access to online resources and social equality for women in the gaming community and its male-driven culture, pointing to its flaws and a need for intervention to establish a safer place for all gamers. Conclusions: The findings offered an insight on the issues faced by female gamer in a video game setting, by withstanding judgment when stereotypes, and by having to face hostile attitudes from fellow gamers, not singularly male gamers. The behavior focused on gender differences and often alluded to sexual objectification to make the female gamers uncomfortable, flowed by attempts to establish an unrequired intimacy.Item Relational and sexual satisfaction during military deployment : a comparative study(2021) Esteves, Higino; Beato, Ana; Santos, Renato; HEI-LAB - Human Environment Interaction LabObjective: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to compare the investment on relationship and the satisfaction with communication, with sexuality and with relationship between a group of Portuguese Military service members during their long term deployment in International Military Missions and a group of similar soldiers that work in their home country. Design and Method: Participants in Long Distance Relationships (LDR, n=172) were Portuguese military members deployed in Afghanistan (n=72), Central-African Republic (n=86) and São Tomé and Príncipe (n=15). The ones that were inGeographically Close Relationships(GCR, n=256) were a Portuguese military members on normal duty in different Military Units and Bases in Portuguese Territory. All voluntary participants were in a romantic relationship and completed an online survey, that included The Investment Model Scale (Rodrigues & Lopes, 2013) and the New Sexual Satisfaction Scale (Pechorro et al., 2014). LDR and GCR data was collected simultaneously, i.e. three months after Soldiers’ deployment .deployment. Correlations and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were performed Results: The findings suggest that the soldiers in LDR were significantly more satisfied with their communication, with their relationship and with their sexuality than soldiers in GCR. No differences were found in the degree of relational investment. Conclusions: Overall, the results are in line with previous research that evidenced an increased overall satisfaction with various relational factors when they are temporarily departed from their partners.Item Relational and sexual satisfaction during military deployment: a comparative study(2021-09) Esteves, Higino; Beato, Ana; Santos, Renato; HEI-LAB - Human Environment Interaction LabMilitary deployments in International Military Missions are a frequent reality for the Portuguese (PRT) military members. Despite the increasing number of researches on post deployment adjustment of military couples, gaps remain on studies focused on the periods of the deployment, namely during the period of physical/geographical separation. In particular, the impact of these missions in couple's adjustment on communication and on both romantic and sexual satisfaction have been poorly studied with this population (Barbudo, Francisco & Santos, 2014). The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to compare the investment on relationship and the satisfaction with communication, with sexuality and with relationship between a group of Portuguese Military service members during their long-term deployment in International Military Missions and a group of similar soldiers that work in their hometowns.Item The relationship between different parenting typologies in fathers and mothers and children’s anxiety(Springer New York, 2015-11-28) Beato, Ana; Pereira, Ana Isabel; Barros, Luísa; Muris, Peter; EPCV - School of Psychology and Life SciencesResearch on the role of parental rearing behaviors in the development of children’s anxiety problems has predominantly adopted a dimensional approach studying the effects of isolated parenting behaviors such as overprotection and rejection, while mainly focusing on the mother. Our study was set up to identify parenting typologies of both mothers and fathers, and to explore their relationship with children’s anxiety symptoms. Three-hundred-and-ninety non-clinical Portuguese children aged 8–12 years completed a self-report questionnaire on anxiety disorder symptoms, while their fathers (27–64 years of age) and mothers (24–65 years of age) filled in two scales on parental rearing behaviors as well as an index of parental anxiety. Cluster analysis revealed three parenting typologies that were similar for mothers and fathers, and were labeled as overinvolved, disengaged, and supportive parenting. Only the disengaged typology of mothers was associated with higher levels of anxiety symptoms on children. Disengaged parents and Overinvolved fathers were associated with higher levels of parental anxiety whereas overinvolved parents evidenced more anxiety/worry about the child. These results suggest that the study of parenting typologies, contextualized within a cultural background, are an invaluable approach because it can be used to explore the effects that different combinations of various parenting behaviors may have on childhood anxiety.Item The Sexology Clinic at the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Lisbon(2017) Pascoal, Patricia; Florindo, Joana; Raposo, Joana; Oliveira, Leonor; Beato, Ana; EPCV - School of Psychology and Life SciencesThe Faculty of Psychology in Lisbon has a Sexology Clinical service working half a day per week that is available to the whole community. Its main goal is to deliver highly qualified sexual psychotherapeutic service to people who present sexual problems and difficulties as well as to support research in the field. All people working in our service are qualified in Clinical Psychology. The current study aims to present data from its first 6 years of functioning concerning the socio-demographic characteristics of the patients as well as the main measures used for assessment and research purposes and the main outputs of the research developed. Data was collected after the patients filled in an informed consent form. We received a total of 204 requests. Of this 83 were men, 108 women and 12 were couples. About half of the requests were referred to another specialist (Psychiatrist, Urologist, Gynaecologist, Family therapist). The questionnaires used included measures of personality, psychopathology, satisfaction with life, cognitive distraction, body image, sexual beliefs, sexual functioning, sexual satisfaction, sexual pleasure, relationship satisfaction, sexual self-disclosure. There are more than 10 research outputs linked to the service, including collaboration in research who has received competitive funding. Our experience demonstrates that sex therapy is necessarily a multidisciplinary work and that a service at a university is an important contribution to build a strong bridge between clinical and research work.Item Sexual sensation-seeking, hypersexuality, and risky sexual behaviors between adults with and without ADHD symptoms(2021) Vandewalle, Márcia; Beato, Ana; EPCV - School of Psychology and Life SciencesAttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by disabling levels of inattention, disorganization and/or hyperactivityimpulsivity that may interfere in diverse areas of functioning across various stages of the human development. Impulsivity emerges as an important longterm symptom in ADHD – having a strong genetic basis with evidence of altered reward processing and dopaminergic dysfunction – and may increase sexual risk behavior during adulthood [1,2]. Although some studies have shown adolescents with ADHD to exhibit more sexual risk behavior and higher levels of sensationseeking and impulsivity, a lack of similar studies in the adult population exists The objective of this study was to compare sexual sensation seeking, hypersexuality and sexual risk behaviors in adults with and without symptoms of ADHD.Item Understanding experiences of discrimination among individuals with mental health challenges : an online qualitative inquiry(Chevron Publishing Corporation, 2024) Beato, Ana; Carvalho, Ana; SANTOS, ISABEL OLIMPIA FIGUEIREDO DOS; Costa, Leonor Pereira da; Albuquerque, Sara; HEI-LAB - Human Environment Interaction LabItem What are sexual rights? : A thematic analysis of Portuguese people's definitions(17th Congress of the European Federation of Sexology, 2024-05-24) Beato, Ana; Cordeiro, Filipa; Pascoal, Patricia; EPCV - School of Psychology and Life Sciences; HEI-LAB - Human Environment Interaction Lab; FPE - Faculty of Psychology and Education
