Face ainda desconhecida da arquitectura moderna portuguesa: Bernardino Carlos Varela Ramalhete: um percurso em Moçambique

Resumo
Dos trabalhos e dissertações apresentados sobre a arquitectura moderna portuguesa, parece resultar a hipótese de que o melhor da sua realização foi projectada e realizada, entre 1930 e 1974, nas ex-colónias. O facto de se tratar de um domínio ainda bastante desconhecido, pouco explorado e aprofundado pesou muito na decisão de o eleger como tema desta dissertação de mestrado. Bem cedo o nome do arquitecto Bernardino Ramalhete se configurou como objectivo central desta pesquisa, visando estudar, analisar e compreender a sua produção arquitectónica em Moçambique, mais concretamente na Beira.
Para além da contextualização da Conferência de Berlim, que ditou o relançamento de um nova visão da questão colonial portuguesa em África, e da caracterização da arquitectura moderna em Portugal, sobretudo em Moçambique, toda a atenção se centrou na busca de informação e referências documentais sobre a obra de Bernardino Ramalhete. A realização de três entrevistas ao visado constituiu momento forte desta pesquisa.
Foi o tratamento desses elementos recolhidos que permitiu perceber que Moçambique acolheu vários exemplares representativos do período moderno e que a marca de Bernardino Ramalhete, enquanto personagem marcante e geradora de pensamentos, se impõe, na produção arquitectónica em Moçambique, como exemplar e paradigmática.
From all the works and dissertations presented concerning modern Portuguese architecture, seams to result the hypothesis that the best of its realization was made in the former African colonies between the years of 1930 1974. Still being a largely unknown and unexplored subject turned it the main reason to elect this theme as the central point of this dissertation. From an early stage the name of architect Bernardino Ramalhete was set as the main goal of this research, in order to study, analyse and understand the Mozambique architectural production, mainly in the Beira city. The Berlin Conference was the event that spoke the relaunch for a new vision of the Portuguese colonial presence in Africa and the characterization of modern architecture in Portugal. Focused especially in Mozambique, all the attention was centered in collecting all the available documents, references and information about the work of this architect. The highest points of this research are the tree interviews given by himself. The treatment of those collected elements that allowed the chance to understand that Mozambique housed numerous exemplars of the modern period and that Bernardino Ramalhete, as an outstanding character and thoughts generator, left a mark on the architectural production in Mozambique, as being exemplary and paradigmatic.
