Adicionalmente,
There are two types of communication patterns in marital interactions: complementary and symmetrical. In the first group, the focus has been in assigned to the demand/withdraw roles and, in the second group, in mutual constructive communication and mutual avoidance. Christensen and Heavey's Communication Pattern Questionnaire - Short Version (CPQ-SV) aims to assess dyadic communication patterns in couples. The present study explored the factor structure and psychometric characteristics of the Portuguese version of CPQ-SV in a sample of 164 heterosexual women. Additionally, it evaluated the perception of involvement in complementary patterns by gender, in the group of women and in a group of 65 heterosexual men. The factorial structure was different from the original, composed of three subscales: Positive Symmetrical Patterns, Negative Alternate Patterns and Negative Complementary Patterns. The questionnaire showed good construct, convergent, divergent and discriminant validity, and good internal consistency. Concerning the perceptions, women identified gender differences in the pattern of initiate/avoid discussion and men in demand/withdraw and criticize/defend standards patterns. In all patterns, the first behavior was significantly more identified in women and the second in men. The association between communication patterns and dyadic adjustment should be considered in therapeutic interventions with couples.
