A Psicopatia é uma perturbação de personalidade, caracterizada por um défice emocional, nomeadamente pela ausência de empatia, bem como pela impulsividade e comportamento antissocial e criminal. O Maquiavelismo é um traço de personalidade, em que se destaca o caráter manipulador, igualmente caracterizado pela correlação negativa com a empatia, mas com capacidade de controlo dos impulsos, sendo que está mais comummente associado aos comportamentos antiéticos. O objetivo da presente dissertação é comparar ambos os constructos, em particular pela pertinência que assumem no estudo do comportamento antiético, antissocial e criminal e, consequentemente, pela sua relevância no âmbito da Psicologia Forense. Conclui-se, com base na evidência disponível à data, que se tratam de constructos de personalidade diferentes, mas sobreponíveis. A Psicopatia e o Maquiavelismo convergem no que respeita a aspetos de ordem emocional e interpessoal, mas divergem na sua motivação e expressão comportamental.
Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by an emotional deficit, namely lack of empathy, as well as for its impulsivity, and it is usually associated with antisocial and criminal behaviour. Machiavellianism is a personality trait, mainly manipulative, also characterized for its negative correlation with empathy, but with the hability for impulse control, and it is usually associated with unethical behaviour. The aim of this dissertation is to compare both constructs, addressing their pertinence in the study of unethical, antisocial and criminal behaviour and, therefore, its relevence in the field of Forensic Psychology. It is concluded, based on the available data, that they are different but overlapping personality constructs. Psychopathy and Machiavellianism converge when it comes to emotional and interpersonal features, but diverge regarding their motivation and behavioural outcomes.
