Entre a Bíblia e a tradição : a Igreja Católica e o tema do suicídio

Abstract

O artigo tem como principal objetivo traçar um panorama sobre o tema do suicídio partindo da forma como o tema é tratado no texto bíblico e como que, posteriormente, tal tema será tratado pela tradição da igreja católica. Para atingir nosso objetivo iniciamos traçando os relatos bíblicos de suicídio pontuando que não há no texto bíblico nenhum tipo de condenação da prática. Em seguida mostramos como que o tema foi trabalhado na história da igreja católica partindo das formulações de Lactâncio, Santo Agostinho e São Tomás de Aquino. Em um terceiro momento mostramos como a igreja católica lidou com o tema do ponto de vista moral. Concluímos afirmando que o modo de abordar o tema do suicídio tem como matriz uma antropologia grega e não uma antropologia bíblica, a que gera desafios grandes para as justificativas que se dão para a condenação do suicídio pela igreja católica.

The main objective of this article is to outline an overview on the theme of suicide, based on how the theme is treated in the biblical text and how, later on, the theme will be treated by the tradition of the Catholic Church.To achieve our objective, we begin by outlining the biblical accounts of suicide, noting that there is no typeof condemnation of the practice in the biblical text.We then show how the subject has been addressed in the history of the Catholic Church, based on the formulations of Lactantius, Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas.In a third moment, we show how the Catholic Church has dealt with the subject from a moral point of view.We conclude by stating that the way of approaching the subject of suicide is based on Greek anthropology and not on biblical anthropology, which creates great challenges for the justifications given for the condemnation of suicide by the Catholic Church.
