This report provides a comprehensive overview of risk management strategies and market opportunities for the commercialization of new biopolymer production technologies. To ensure a broad and informed perspective, data was collected through a combination of extensive literature reviews, interviews, and workshops with key stakeholders. The objectives were multifaceted: (1) to identify the primary industry and consumer barriers to biopolymer commercialization outlined in the literature; (2) to gather stakeholders' individual and collective perceptions regarding bioplastics, focusing on business models, risks, challenges, market opportunities, and strategic recommendations; and (3) to provide insights into effective risk management strategies to address these barriers, while facilitating discussions on how to overcome them and enable the successful commercialisation of biopolymer production technologies. Our findings reveal that the commercialization of biopolymers encounters several barriers, including technological challenges in scaling production, high production costs, a complex regulatory landscape, and consumer misconceptions. In response, we identified several key risk management strategies: fostering technological innovation to enhance production performance and scalability; fostering multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to overcome technological and knowledge limitations in biopolymer production; implementing cost-reduction measures through government incentives and private investment; harmonizing regulatory frameworks to create a supportive environment for commercialization; improving consumer awareness and product labelling to address misconceptions, build trust, thereby encouraging greater adoption of bioplastics. The strategies discussed aim not only to mitigate existing challenges but also to unlock significant market opportunities. The growing environmental consciousness worldwide presents a promising avenue for international market expansion and innovation. Advancements in biopolymer technology enhance applicability across various industries, particularly in packaging, agriculture and biomedical sectors, all of which are actively pursuing sustainable materials. Furthermore, international market expansion and the promotion of circular economy practices present additional avenues for integrating bioplastics into sustainable production and waste management systems. Our results indicate that by effectively navigating these challenges and capitalizing on market opportunities, the biopolymer industry has the potential to become a catalyst for transformative change, fostering the circular economy and a more environmentally responsible future.en
