Resumo
A sociedade tem sido pautada por novos problemas sociais desencadeados pelo
envelhecimento e a longevidade da população, tais como a violência contra idosos. Este
trabalho foi elaborado tendo em conta a minha preocupação em aprofundar conhecimentos
sobre este tema. O envelhecimento é uma realidade inalterável com várias facetas que ocorre
num contexto de desigualdades sociais onde se evidencia o poder e o controlo por parte de
alguns membros da comunidade, remetendo a população idosa à solidão, pobreza, isolamento
e exclusão social. Por se tratar de um fenómeno de contexto social influencia vários sistemas
tais como o familiar que tem sido modificado e redefinido ao longo dos anos. É fulcral existir
resposta e apoio das famílias para com os idosos, bem como solidariedade intergeracional,
porém nem sempre a rede primária consegue corresponder ao expetável face à conjuntura
social e económica da sociedade atual. O elevado número de idosos e a falta de apoios a esta
população produz o aumento exponencial de outros fenómenos tais como a violência e os
maus tratos, na qual se insere a problemática da violência contra idosos que vai crescendo em
todas as sociedades. A violência que ocorre em âmbito familiar tem suscitado bastante
preocupação na sociedade portuguesa face à sua evolução e dificuldade em se detetar e
intervir, dado que ocorre numa esfera íntima e fechada.
The society has been confronted with new social problems, such as violence against the elderly, caused by aging and longevity of the population. The motivation to develop this investigation/work is related with my personal interest on this subject. Aging is an unalterable reality that occurs in a context of social inequality. It shows the power and control practiced by some members of the community, causing elderly loneliness, poverty, isolation and social exclusion. It can affect various systems, such as the family, because it is a social context phenomenon. It is very important for families to respond and support their elderly, in manner that have intergenerational solidarity. However, the primary network can´t always properly respond to the needs. The high number of elderly and the lack of support for this population cause the exponential increase of other phenomena such as violence and mistreatment against elderly people. The violence that occurs in the family environment has caused great concern in the Portuguese society because of its evolution and difficult to detect and intervene in it, as it occurs in an intimate setting.
