Since the invention of the movable type press, books have been ornamented, imitating, although modestly, the illuminations of medieval handwritten books. Some even feature multiple illustrations, such as the Crónica do Imperador Vespasiano. This fact is not surprising, since the discovery of the woodcut and the calcogravure preceded that of typography. In the same way, illustration accompanies, from a very early age, works for children, since in João de Barros’s, Dialogos de preceitos moráes cõ prática delles, em módo de iogo (1540) children were taught virtues through illustrations. Popular literature, commonly known as colportage, resorted to the use of engravings. In fact, many of the stories in these pamphlets, some linked to the Breton or Carolingian cycle, others to the Legenda Aurea, to satire or to the Reports of the shipwrecks of the Indian ships (whose success would have continued in the Nau Catrineta), to traditional tales, later circulated in the form of fado lyrics or as leaflets read by the people and children. This type of literature survived among us until, at least, the 90s of the 20th century, in the form of books for children. They were editions so stripped down that, curiously, they seem more like heirs of these pamphlets, as is the case of A DonzelaTeodora, A Princesa Magalona, João de Calais..., than precursors of the well-kept, well-illustrated books of current Children’s Literature. Keywords: children’s literature; cordel pamphlets; popular literature; children.
