Resumo
O propósito da presente dissertação é abordar a relação entre os conceitos de lugar
e espaço em arquitectura - o Lugar, Sesimbra e o Espaço, o Museu.
Mais do que entender o lugar, neste caso a vila de Sesimbra, pretende-se
compreender como se pode chegar de um lugar a um espaço arquitectónico, o Museu
Marítimo de Sesimbra. Importa entender as origens da vila, o desenvolvimento do núcleo
urbano que surge principalmente, por influência do mar; e também como um espaço
arquitectónico, o museu, pode ser representativo desse lugar, dessa identidade e cultura
marítimas.
Neste contexto, o trabalho organiza-se segundo uma metodologia que pressupõe um
enquadramento teórico com o estudo e análise dos conceitos que o regem; destacando os
conceitos de lugar, espaço e museu.
Por forma a retirar conclusões e tomar decisões assertivas aquando da apresentação
da proposta para um novo museu, foram analisados estudos de caso que se enquadram
nestas temáticas e também vários outros elementos que apoiam o desenvolvimento deste
trabalho.
A compreensão dos temas abordados serviu de premissa para a escolha do local de
implantação e como se poderia desenvolver uma proposta para o novo museu.

The purpose of this dissertation is to address the relationship between the concepts of place and space in architecture - Place, Sesimbra and Space, the Museum. More than understanding the place, in this case the town of Sesimbra, the aim is to understand how one can get from a place to an architectural space, the Maritime Museum of Sesimbra. It is important to understand the origins of the village, the development of the urban core that arises mainly under the influence of the sea; and as an architectural space, the museum can be representative of that place, that maritime identity and culture. In this context, the work is organized according to a methodology that presupposes a theoretical framework with the study and analysis of the concepts that govern it; highlighting the concepts of place, space and museum. To draw conclusions and take assertive decisions when submitting the proposal for a new museum, case studies that fall under these themes were analyzed, as well as several other elements that support the development of this work. Understanding the topics covered served as a premise for choosing the location for implementation and how a proposal for the new museum could be developed.
