| dc.description.abstract | Neste artigo analisa-se a reacção de cerca de trinta jornais suíços sobre o Regicídío do Terreiro do Paço. A grande maioria condena o duplo assassinato. Só a imprensa maçónica e socialista é quase unânime em aprovar esta «justiça popular». Os jornalistas helvéticos, mesmo os da imprensa regional, não se limitam a descrever os acontecimentos de Fevereiro de 1908 em Portugal: comentam os factos e procuram as responsabilidades. Aparecem as clivagens entre os jornais: por um lado os que falam da perda dos valores cristãos e acusam as sociedades secretas, por outro os que defendem João Franco e que responsabilizam os republicanos, enfim os que tomam o antigo Primeiro ministro como o principal responsável da tragédia. Quase todos os quotidianos suíços falam da decadência e da fraqueza do regime, mas poucos jornalistas acreditam no sucesso duma eventual República num país que possui 80 % de analfabetos. | pt |
| dc.description.abstract | This article analyses the reaction of approximately thirty Swiss newspapers to the Terrreiro do Paço Regicide. Most of these condemn the double murder. Only the Freema - sonry and the Socialist Press almost unani - mously approved this act of «popular justice». Swiss journalists, including those writing for the Regional Press, refrained from simply relating the February 1908 events in Portugal: they commented on them, seeking to attribute responsibilities for the state of affairs. There are differences of opinion amongst the news - papers: those that focus on the loss of Christian values and accuse the secret societies; those that defend the case of João Franco and condemn the Republicans; and, finally, those holding the previous Prime Minister responsible for the tragedy. The majority of the Swiss newspapers refer to the decline and the weakness of the Regime; nevertheless, very few journalists believe the successful imple - mentation of a Republic to be possible in a country with an illiteracy rate of 80 per cent. | en |
