Our aim was to establish an explanatory model of self-efficacy in militaries in mission in a island territory. A sample of 276 soldiers belonging to the Portuguese Army Military Region of the Azores, placed on active, 83.3% men and 16.7% women was collected and aged between 18 and 34 years. Were used as measures a sociodemographic questionnaire, the scale of self-efficacy (Ribeiro, n.d.), the Scale for Depression EADS-21 (Ribeiro, Honrado & Leal, 2004) and the Scale social support satisfaction (Ribeiro, 1995). The results showed that women had more satisfaction with friends and intimacy, less satisfaction with family and less depression; that younger, married and with higher education have greater satisfaction with social support; the military with more depressive symptoms have lower self-efficacy and lower satisfaction with social support; and the military with higher satisfaction with social support have higher self-efficacy. We conclude that it is possible that the military environment has characteristics that influence satisfaction with social support and it seems possible to predict self-efficacy through depression, satisfaction with intimacy, satisfaction with friends, sex and distance from the family.
