With this communication we intend to provide an account and characterize the frequent practice of humour around and within the Catholic Church. In fact, the Catholic Church, its hierarchy, its institutions, its members connected by various relations of loyalty and obedience, its morals, its orders, have been and continue be the subject of much humour, either as a critical weapon or as a way to relativize the rigidity of this two thousand year old institution. But the humour produced by critics of the Church, who punish the fundamentalist excesses of some and hypocrisy of others this way, is complemented by a very fruitful use of humour by the most committed members of the Catholic Church itself. The ecclesiastical to humour practiced by priests and monks and even nuns is well known. This internal humour works as a form of mitigation and evasion of the weight of seriousness required by a religious life in the Church. It is certainly a healthy form of therapy as well. Our purpose is to gather a sample of a set of emblematic and representative sayings and jokes of the humour practiced inside and outside the Church in order to present a proposal for characterization and classification. We will further question the uses of humour that allow us to illustrate amusing appreciations of the various institutional and relational fields of the Church, as well as those related to the exercise of power, such as papal humour, humour arising from a certain competition between religious orders, humour between priests and sacristans, among others.
