The present study aim was to analyse the relationships between satisfaction with life, coping strategies, anxiety and self-esteem in consumers and not consumers of alcohol, in a sample of 225 college students, 88 male (39%) and 136 female (60%), between the ages of 18 and 67 years (M = 26.05; SD = 8.70). Were used as instruments: Adolescent Alcohol Involvement Scale (AAIS; Mayer & Filstead, 1979), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS, Diener, 1984), Coping Responses Inventory (CRI; Moos, 1993), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI; Beck & Steer, 1993) and Rosenbergg self-esteem scale (RSES; Rosenberg, 1965). Results showed that men drink more alcohol and with higher frequency compared with women, there are no statistically significant differences between genders for life satisfaction and self-esteem, but that women have more anxious symptoms than men. Coping strategies are related to life satisfaction, anxiety and self-esteem. Was not found a relationship between alcohol consumption and satisfaction with life, self-esteem and anxiety. However, there is a positive relationship between alcohol consumption and the use of avoidance coping strategy. It is concluded that it is possible to predict the frequency of alcohol consumption through the dimensions stydied.
