fundamentais.
The study of the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is a crucial issue, since nowadays the world population spends 90% of their time in indoor spaces. This problematic becomes ever more relevant when applied to schools, which gather a more sensitive and susceptible group of the population, children and young people. This study aims to analyze the IAQ of school buildings located in the urban areas of Lisbon and Loures. For this purpose, concentrations of the pollutants CO, CO2, VOCs, PM2.5, PM10 and Aldehydes were monitored in 12 classrooms from 6 schools. The results show that several pollutants concentrations were above the limits identified by national legislation. Levels were above the parameters allowed by Portuguese and European Legislation and the World Health Organization, namely CO2, largely exceeding the limit value. The PM2.5 was also above the limit value in almost all schools, and the PM10 represented higher values in 33% of the schools. This scenario is concerning since young people spend a large amount of their daily time in school, where safe conditions should be guaranteed to promote their learning process and general well-being. Thus, actions such as a correct dimensioning and ventilation of the classrooms in accordance with the number of occupants, and avoidance of indoor or outdoor pollution sources exposure in schools should be safeguarded.
