The iconic architecture created from the twentieth century, is a subject much talked about, in part because it is synonymous of performance and innovation in architecture, it is also synonymous of huge spending and unmet expectations. Iconic architecture has to be linked to a strategic plan that defines the strategies of urban planning in relation to the city, only in this way one can exploit their potential, of it´s specific characteristics. The Casa da Música in Oporto was the result of both destinations, adored by some and hated by others, has since then gradually gained its position in the city, and is now undeniably one of the city icons. The object of investigation is how the House of Music was integrated in the urban context, what are the main changes that has generated, and how it made the city of Oporto a better city to the national and international views. The fate of iconic architecture is difficult to predict, since many of the buildings were only the interval between the next iconic novelty, leaving unresolved urban fabric and no longer being icons. Maintaining the status of novelty is one of the biggest challenges facing iconic architecture.
