This study focus on the factors that might influence dysfunctional alcohol consumption amongst college students. We analyzed the association between personality traits, patterns of alcohol consumption and emotional adjustment in a sample of convenience with 200 university students, 93 of whom were males (46.5%) and 107 were females (53.5%) with ages between 17 and 57 years (M = 24.61, SD = 6.70). For the recollection of the required data were applied: a socio-demographic data questionnaire; the Big Five Inventory (BFI; Benet-Martinez & John, 1998) to assess the personality; the Alcohol Use Disorders Indentification Test (AUDIT; Roque da Cunha, 2002) in order to identify patterns of alcohol consumption; the Drinking Motive Questionnaire (DMQ; Stewart, Zeitlin & Samoluk; 1996) to realize the motives of alcohol consumption and the Brief Symptoms Inventory (BFI; Canavarro, 2002) to assess the emotional adjustment. The results reveal the existence of a significant relation between emotional adjustment and patterns of consumption, which suggests that lower emotional adjustments are related to a larger consumption of alcohol. The coping motives and positive affects are also significantly correlated with the consumption pattern.
