Envelhecer na prisão. : Desafios e programas de apoio ao envelhecimento em contexto prisional – uma revisão da literatura

Abstract

Este estudo analisa as dinâmicas do envelhecimento em contexto prisional, abordando os desafios enfrentados pelas pessoas idosas reclusas e a eficácia de programas sociais destinados a melhorar a sua qualidade de vida. Com base numa revisão sistemática da literatura, conduzida segundo o protocolo PRISMA e abrangendo 12 estudos publicados entre 2019 e 2024, identificaram-se cinco dimensões centrais: insuficiência de infraestruturas para responder às necessidades desta população, impacto do envelhecimento precoce no ambiente prisional, eficácia limitada dos programas sociais, necessidade de cuidados paliativos e barreiras estruturais e éticas no tratamento de pessoas com demência. Apesar de algumas boas práticas, subsistem lacunas significativas na adaptação de políticas e infraestruturas. Conclui-se que o envelhecimento em reclusão exige reformas urgentes e integradas, que promovam o envelhecimento digno, a saúde e a reintegração social dos reclusos mais velhos, assegurando o pleno respeito pelos seus direitos humanos fundamentais.This study analyses the dynamics of ageing in a prison context, addressing the challenges faced by elderly prisoners and the effectiveness of social programmes aimed at improving their quality of life. Based on a systematic review of the literature, conducted according to the PRISMA protocol and covering 12 studies published between 2019 and 2024, five central dimensions were identified: insufficient infrastructure to meet the needs of this population, the impact of premature ageing on the prison environment, the limited effectiveness of social programmes, the need for palliative care, and structural and ethical barriers in the treatment of people with dementia. Despite some good practices, significant gaps remain in adaptingpolicies and infrastructures. The conclusion is that ageing in prison requires urgent and integrated reforms that promote dignified ageing, health and social reintegration of older prisoners while ensuring full respect for their fundamental human rights.
