Cape Verde history began with its discovery in 1460 by Portuguese navigators who, in spite of the constraints of the region, managed to start the settlement, beginning a life based on the trade with the African coast and, later on, with Europe and America because of the slave trade. For Portugal, Cape Verde was a source of revenue because of its geostrategic position. The king appointed representatives who ruled the islands in order to receive the profits which resulted from the trade and to send them to the kingdom. Cape Verde needed five centuries to become independent and in the archipelago there was never struggle against the Portuguese presence. On July 5th 1975, it became independent and opted for a single political party system which remained for fifteen years. In 1990 due to the international situation changes and the domestic saturation, there was an opening towards a multiparty system with the creation of a new political force, the MpD, which won the first multiparty elections. Later the PAICV returned to Government thanks to votes and this alternation was well accepted received by everyone because it proved the existence of democracy in the archipelago. Cape Verde has profited cooperation for the development, as it can be seen by the evolution of its HDI. Actually, the special partnership with UE is a challenge and an opportunity.
