Museu de arte popular : memórias de poder

Abstract

Tendo como pano de fundo o Museu de Arte Popular, o presente trabalho procura compreender a decisão política que determinou o seu encerramento em 2008, enquadrando-a no período histórico vivido pela sociedade portuguesa desde o ano de 1948, data em que foi inaugurado, até aos nossos dias. É traçado o registo biográfico do Museu, assim como a matriz institucional que a ele preside, pretendendo-se, com o auxílio de informação produzida em várias áreas científicas complementares da museologia e presente em fontes documentais de arquivo, estabelecer uma descrição dos seus principais aspectos caracterizantes – onde se inclui a descrição do percurso institucional, do espaço expositivo, acervo, – bem como das relações funcionais verificadas entre o Museu e as diferentes tutelas dos períodos do Estado Novo e da Democracia. Having the Museum of Popular Art as background, the essay at hand, tries to understand the political decision which determined the closing down of the museum in 2008,taking into account the historical period lived by the Portuguese society since 1948, when the museum was opened to public, until our present days. In this essay the biographic timeline for the museum is plotted, as well as its institutional nature, having the goal of establishing a description of its main aspects and characterizing features, with the help of information produced in several scientific areas complementary to museology which are present in the archive’s documentation. On the one hand this includes describing the path of the institution, the exhibit area, the patrimony and on the other hand also describing the functional relations between the museum and the different entities of political power throughout the different stages of the so called “Estado Novo” and afterwards in democracy.
