Resumo
Este texto pretende analisar a utilização da repressão e do massacre como estratégia da aplicação eficaz de medidas políticas pragmáticas e reformistas no quadro da acção política do governo do Marquês de Pombal. Estudamos a questão dos massacres da política pombalina na perspectiva das leituras divergentes do significado e valor do período pombalino no contexto da recepção de Pombal na Cultura Portuguesa: a leitura filopombalina e a antipombalina. Esta última sobrevaloriza a crueldade do governo absolutista e despótico do Ministro de D. José I, e a primeira tende a matizar o impacto das repressões pombalinas.
The present article primarily aims at analysing the uses of violent repression during the rule of the Marquis of Pombal. The violent repression of this period can be regarded as a means for imposing pombaline pragmatic reforms and policies. On the other hand, this article also views the historical fortunes of the pombaline massacres within the context of the reception of Pombal in Portuguese historical culture. The killings committed under the orders of Pombal have been viewed in two opposite perspectives: namely the pro- and anti-pombaline. While the latter overestimated the despotism and cruelty of Pombal, the former played down the impact of his repression.
