What university for the 21st century? It is a short essay that asks about the meaning of the university in the present and near future of the 21st century. To do this, it first reviews the viability of the classic university models and the missions that are usually attributed to universities in the contemporary stage (transmission of knowledge, production of knowledge and dissemination of high culture), which are usually synthesized in teaching, research and dissemination of knowledge and its transfer. Next, the new and old actors of a university that is above all change and adaptation (professors, students and university service technicians) are reviewed. Third, the complex issue of the challenge of thinking and governing the university in the coming decades is addressed. Finally, a firm commitment is made to a humanist university, with paideia, attentive to the new emerging paradigms, in forced confrontation with the functionalist models that Anglo-Saxon neo-capitalism intends to assign to the university of the 21st century
