This essay is written to provide fresh, in-depth perspectives on the key trends and recent debates in the field of Postcolonialism, false notion of Eurocentric Universalism and its relation to the development of Contemporary African Literatures. In the course of this essay, we shall highlight the natures, roles, and complexities of diverse histories and cultures which constitute the ‘postcolonial’ world and at the same time explore, in broad, the study of African Literature and in particular, the relevant aspects to Anglophone, Francophone and Lusophone African Literatures. My aim is to situate postcolonial literary and theoretical materials within the African complex histories and diverse cultures which, from my own point of views, constitute the postcolonial world and at the same time, emphasize enormous literary concepts, dynamism and debate that characterise this field of studies. Based on the use of current literary and postcolonial theories as well as literary scholarship, my main objective in this essay is to stress a sense of the long histories of indigenous intellectual activity in Anglophone, Francophone and Lusophone African context and other postcolonial locations while also developing the means to apply postcolonial theory in culturally sensitive, ‘located’ ways as portrayed in the literary works of renowned African authors such as Chinua Achebe, Luandino Vieria and Hamadou Kouroma.
