Foram utilizadas as seguintes medidas de avaliação: Big Five Inventory (BFI; Benet-Martínez & John, 1998), Police Stress Questionnaire – Operational (PSQ-Op) (McCreary and Thompson, 2006; Wearing and Heady, 1993) e Coping Responses Inventory (CRI – Adult Form; Rudolf H. Moos & Ph. D., 1993).
This research pertains to stress, coping and personality factors in police officers of the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), specifically refering to transit, proximity patrolling and rapid intervention officers. The sample consists of 150 PSP police officers. Of these, 50 officers are from the transit division, 50 officers from the proximity patrolling division and 50 officers from the rapid intervention division, with ages comprised between 22 and 57 years of age with an average age of 41.25 years (SD = 9.53). This study aims to understand how stress is experienced in the three areas (transit, proximity patrolling and rapid intervention) of the PSP, taking into account different aspects of personality and how it affects the daily life of the officers, both professionally and personally, and to understand which are the best coping strategies that can be used. The following evaluation measures were used: Big Five Inventory (BFI; Benet- Martinez & John, 1998), Police Stress Questionnaire - Operational (PSQ-Op) (McCreary and Thompson, 2006; Wearing and Heady, 1993) and Coping Responses Inventory (CRI - Adult Form; Rudolf H. Moos & Ph. D., 1993). The results obtained show significant associations between personality dimensions, namely kindness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience in relation to stress. There are negative correlations between the dimensions of friendliness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness to experience relatively to stress, while the openness to experience dimension correlates positively with the dimension of coping logical analysis . This study also demonstrates that the rapid intervention police officers are subject to a higher level of stress when compared to transit police officers who have low levels of stress. The results also show that male police officers experience lower stress levels when compared to their female counterparts.
