The aim of this research is to examine motivational differences between individuals with addictive behaviours admitted to a therapeutic community at different stages of treatment, respectively: 1 month, 6 months and over 12 months. The transtheoretical model, moods changes and psychopathology were drawn on to form a conceptual framework for analysis. Ninety-five individuals participated in the study, being divided into 3 study groups according to the aforementioned treatment stages, respectively: 35, 30 and 30 individuals. Motivation for treatment was evaluated through the use of a Portuguese revised version of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA) scale. The existence of psychopathology was assessed through the Minnesota Personality Inventory (Mini-Mult) test, a reduced version of the MMPI; whilst depression was determined by applying the Beck Depression Inventory questionnaire (BDI). According to the results obtained, amongst the 3 different evaluated stages, no statistically significant differences were found between patients’ motivations for treatment, humour and psychopathology. However, as far as values are concerned, a reverse trend could be observed during the second evaluation stage, which allowed for a better understanding of the treatment’s dynamics. According to our clinical experience, the results conveyed significant meaning, by suggesting that after six months of admittance to a therapeutic community, changes in average values may result from the contingencies of decision-making, awareness and abstinence maintenance.
