There are different types of adverse childhood. The phenomenon has been the focus of national and international attention from entities such as APAV (Portuguese Association for Victim Support) and UNICEF due to the impact adversity has on a person’s life and relationships across the life cycle. Additionally, the literature points to the influence that adverse experiences can have on antisocial behavior. For this reason, we aimed to explore the association between adverse childhood experiences, criminal behavior, and aggression in a sample of 257 Portuguese adults. Using a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, an Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire, a Criminal Behavior Self-Report, and a Premeditated/Impulsive Aggression Scale. Despite showing low correlation values, current data is promising regarding the relationships demonstrated between certain forms of adversity, such as abuse and manifestations of aggression, either impulsive or premeditated, and criminal acts of different severity. Current results emphasize the importance of addressing the impact of adversity and violence since some early experiences can physically and psychologically affect a human being throughout his life. It is, therefore, considered opportune to investigate the implications of adversity for the practice of criminal behavior.
