Guilherme Braga was the author of two relevant works concerning the anticlericalism fight that bestowed him straightway the status of Junqueiro and Gomes Leal’s predecessor.Os Falsos Apóstolos (1871) comprise a shout of indignation against the Jesuit school, tinted with violence and faced the past, and suggest a laical school in a complete opposite signal. It is a booklet with some weaknesses nevertheless it is able to pass the message due to the simplicity of processes and the use of some stereotypes.Cheered by the liberals, the author was excommunicated by the bishop of Pará, causing a retaliation booklet – O Bispo (1874) – a much more solid and enhanced work. The poet quest, in an anticlericalism that we can consider as Christian and from within, was at first more inclined to create a new public opinion rather than go against religion itself. Once his voice wasn’t worthy of even the smallest reflection from the Church, his second attempt was radicalized in an anticlericalism that, though defending Christ, can be said more revolutionary, touching even the borders of pornography.
