Resumo
O ensino das artes visuais (e das outras artes…) tem sido remetido para um plano de secundaridade nas nossas escolas. Neste artigo se procura refletir sobre as potencialidades das artes em geral e, de um modo mais focalizado, das artes visuais numa outra possível integração no currículo escolar e descrevem-se exemplos de como obras de arte funcionam como referências fundamentais em situações complexas da vida. Conclui-se que, se a capacidade crítica de cada homem e mulher face à sua própria vivência e à múltipla informação envolvente é a condição sine qua non ao progresso material e social da humanidade, as artes visuais, em conexão com outras formas de conhecimento, têm uma função inalienável na procura de futuros alternativos.
The teaching of visual arts (and other arts ...) has been submitted to a view of second rank in our schools. This article attempts to reflect on the potential of the arts in general and, in a more focused way, on the visual arts in another possible integration into the school curriculum and it describes some examples of how works of art may serve as key references in the complex situations of life. It follows that, if the critical capacity of every man and woman vis-à-vis their own experience and the multiple surrounding information is the sine qua non condition to the material and social progress of mankind, the visual arts, in connection with other forms of knowledge, have an inalienable role in the in the research of alternative futures.
