Item Harmonization of policies and training systems in Europe for urban development : The Experience of LUDA Project(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2005) Moutinho, Mário Caneva; ECATI - School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information Technologies; FCSEA - Faculty of Social Sciences, Education and AdministrationThe work developed in LUDA’s project has clearly showed that, in a European economic and cultural diversified frame, crossed by recent and not so recent historical challenging processes, the issues of the urban affairs certainly have different layouts, but, as a matter of fact, we can assume that in their essence they are common to all regions. Identifying a set of common problems is not difficult: the Luda’s; the disadjustment between people and goods mobility, the difficult articulation between space and development sustainability the fragile features of the urban space in its complexity, the responsible social management of current migrations etc.Item The re-urbanization of the city center of Manaus , Brazil : facing the challenges of informal settlements(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2006) Magalhães, Fernanda; Rojas, Eduardo; ECATI - School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information TechnologiesIllegal occupation of urban land in Brazil is a widespread phenomenon. Slum dwellers are excluded from the attributes of urban citizenship although they provide the labor force required by low productivity urban services needed by cities. Illegal settlements generate multiple problems for the rest of the city . Its solution is of key relevance to the city in general but also provide an opportunity for the social and economic advancement of slum dwellers. The programs required to attain these results are complex and difficult to implement underscoring the challenges countries will face to attain the Millennium Development Goals of reducing the population living in slums.Item The undergraduate level (1st study cycle) as a fundamental platform/ standard for the development of Urban and Regional Planning in higher education programs(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2006) Moutinho, Mário Caneva; Souza, Antônio Luís de; Magalhães, Fernanda; ECATI - School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information TechnologiesThe ongoing reforms, which were introduced under the Bologna Process and have already been extended outside of Europe , are a unique opportunity for reinforcing and structuring a common platform of understanding among members, based on the full time undergraduate courses in ( Urbanismo) Urban and Regional Planning. The training programs at this 1st cycle level, will obviously continue with the 2nd and 3rd cycles (Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and PhD Degree or 3+2+3 years). The training programs at this full time 1st cycle level, can also becomes the framework of understanding for the development of research in the urban fields at national and international levels.
